Mrs. Rosheim

When I think back to my elementary school years, the one thing that instantly comes to mind is my teacher Miss Parker sitting on her desk reading aloud from The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.  I knew then I would become a teacher.   Books have always been important to me.  I loved seeing the bookmobile pulling into my school yard each week during the summer.  I read and reread the Bobbsey Twins series over and over.  I wanted to live in a boxcar just like the Boxcar Children.  I loved reading challenges and always tried to read more than anyone else.

Following college, I became a first grade teacher at Franklin Elementary in Liberty.  I loved teaching, planning, reading, and spending my day with children. My school librarian at the time noticed my love of reading and kids and steered me in the direction of a library science degree.  I am so glad that I took her advice.  Thank you Joan!

When the opportunity to become a library media specialist finally came, I jumped at the chance and have never looked back.  I am so lucky to work in a job that allows me to share my love of books with children.  What an amazing feeling it is to match a child to a book that they simply can't put down. 

In the past 18 years this job has changed so much and I have had to learn and take risks along the way.  I helped set up the first bank of computers at Lewis and Clark, learned how to use the Internet, and have been the first to teach students about new technologies as they rapidly approach.  But in the end, it is a beautiful, shiny, new book that still makes me smile.

The fabulous thing about our library is that it really is open 24 hours a day.  By logging on to our website, students can blog with friends about books, research questions they have, listen to stories online, search our online catalog for books, take online quizzes for award books, and so much more.

Each morning I am greeted by students returning books, checking out new ones, sharing a book they have read, asking questions, and sometimes just coming in to say hello...what a lucky gal I am!

Mrs. Haynes

As far back as I remember I have loved to read. Some of my favorite books growing up were The Phantom Tollbooth, A Wrinkle in Time and Stuart Little. I remember participating in summer reading programs at the library and earning prizes. I wasn’t the fastest reader, but I could get lost in a book. There was the thrill of finding new, great books and re-reading my favorites over and over again.

When I was in junior high, I took a class in library science, where I learned how the books were organized. When I was in high school I began working in the St. Louis County Library shelving books. I enjoyed pulling out books that looked like good ones or taking a few minutes to read the Everybody books that were new.
 
When I went to college I studied Chemical Engineering, because I loved my math and science classes in school. After I graduated, I was an engineer in a place where they made Pampers diapers and then to the place where they roasted Folgers’ Coffee, but I never stopped my love of reading. I started reading books to my three kids and rediscovered some of my old favorite books and found new favorites. I left my job at Folgers to stay home with my kids eight years ago. When my youngest went to school, I started volunteering in the Lewis and Clark library. What fun to be around all of the books that I have always loved! I then had the opportunity to work at Lewis and Clark. Now, I actually get paid for being around books and I especially enjoy getting the opportunity to talk to kids about books and find out what they like. I feel so fortunate because I get to do something that I enjoy so much!
